Northern Coordination Committee of the Communist Party of India (Maoist): Postmodern Opportunism

“While maintaining this firm position, our Party is also continuing to advance in the struggle against the anarchic practices of imperialism. Our Party has defined sexual opportunism as follows: sexual opportunism is opportunism in the sphere of sexual practice; that is, sexual activity divorced from the guidance of proletarian ideology. Sexual opportunists are driven by the spontaneous, petty-bourgeois, imperialism-driven, postmodernist logic of ‘pleasure and gratification’. Postmodernist intellectuals promote this kind of sexual activity, while opportunists cling to it, because once politics becomes distorted, every aspect of life becomes distorted along with it. And within every distortion, postmodernist ideology binds opportunists tightly. They go hand in hand, and they will inevitably perish together. In a Party that carries on the legacy of Comrades Marx, Lenin, and Mao Zedong, postmodern opportunists have no place. To revitalize the Party’s work, they must be expelled.”

“We need to re-examine our understanding of class struggle. Many comrades once held the mistaken view that armed struggle was the only form of class struggle. Armed struggle is indeed the highest form of class struggle, but if we become lax on the ideological front and do not regard the struggle on this front as part of class struggle, then we are doomed to fail on the front of armed struggle.”

On July 8, 2026, Red Herald reposted an article by the Northern Coordination Committee of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), titled “Postmodern Opportunism.” I used DeepL and ChatGPT to produce a machine translation and carry out an initial manual proofreading, and am now posting the first draft of the Chinese-to-English translation.

Afterword

Some people in leftist circles claim that the “Northern Coordination Committee” is a fake organization supported by the old Indian state, intended to link certain “progressive intellectuals” with the Communist Party of India (Maoist), making it convenient to label them “Maoists” and arrest them. Their reasoning is that press releases previously issued by the Central Committee, the Eastern Regional Bureau, and other bodies of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) never mentioned this organization, while the organization itself claimed that certain “progressive intellectuals” were traitors to the Party and expelled them from the Party—an unusual situation, since the Communist Party of India (Maoist) had never openly linked progressive intellectuals directly to the Party in the past. Personally, I think that, for people in leftist circles, some of the article’s statements criticizing LGBT people may have “gone beyond the bounds of permissible courtesy,” and that this is why they support the view that the “Northern Coordination Committee” is fake.

In view of the above, and given that following the paralysis of the Central Committee of the CPI (Maoist), the Northern Coordination Committee became virtually the CPI (Maoist)’s only source of press releases, while Red Herald also reposted some documents from the Northern Coordination Committee, I chose to try translating this theoretical article into Chinese. I may translate other documents later as well, which will also make it easier to determine the nature of this organization.

During the translation process, ChatGPT discovered that the English translation contained many spelling and grammatical errors. This may be because the severe situation facing the Indian revolution has left the authors no time to correct such minor details. Although this caused difficulties for the translation—for example, there was the word “malagation,” which could not be found in any English-Chinese dictionary—GPT successfully inferred from the context that it was a misspelling of “amalgamation” and provided a logically appropriate translation.

In addition, while searching for the original Chinese text of the quotation from Chairman Mao, I discovered that the article “Things Are Beginning to Change” in Volume 5 of the Selected Works of Mao Zedong, published during the Hua-revisionist period, was also an adulterated version: at least in the following passage, “There is also a section of people with revisionist or Right-opportunist ideas. These people are comparatively dangerous, because their ideas are a reflection of bourgeois ideas within the Party. They yearn for bourgeois liberalism and deny everything. They have countless ties with bourgeois intellectuals in society. For several months, people have been criticizing dogmatism while letting revisionism off the hook; revisionism must be criticized. If dogmatism is not criticized, many wrong things cannot be corrected. We should now begin paying attention to criticizing revisionism.”, “Revisionism must be criticized” was altered to “Dogmatism must be criticized”, while some punctuation was also changed to conceal the fact of the alteration. The version altered by the Hua revisionists was translated into Hindi and other languages, and was quoted by the author of “Postmodern Opportunism”—one could say that its poison has spread overseas.

The presumably official English translation, the original Hindi text, and more documents from the Northern Coordination Committee can be found via the hyperlinks. The bold text, footnotes, hyperlinks, and other special formatting in the Chinese translation PDF were added by the translator; in the original, only the individual headings used special formatting.

The Indian revolution is over.

That party, which was once capable of waging armed struggle, is now so paralyzed that even its central leadership has ground to a halt.

Do you stand by what you’re saying? Without investigating, you have no right to comment.

Modi said earlier this year that the CPI (Maoist) could be completely eliminated by midyear, and he even claimed that this had been achieved. Now that the CPI (Maoist) can still issue documents and statements, doesn’t that disprove the repressive actions of India’s reactionary government and prove that the Indian government has failed?
Besides, without any objectivity, for some nobody to just toss out two sentences like that—what kind of attitude is that?

But now the Communist Party of India (Maoist) no longer has a central leadership—only a coordinating committee and some local organizations remain. I feel that they’re in a very difficult situation.

Why does an obscure nobody feel entitled to make remarks like these? It is true that the Indian revolution has been severely suppressed by reactionaries at home and abroad, and that all of its leaders have sacrificed their lives. Objectively speaking, the Indian revolution is indeed going through a low point right now. But does that really give some nobody the right to dismiss it so casually and contemptuously? What do you mean, “it’s finished”? This nobody should think about how such remarks are any different from those made by people in online left-wing circles. Just like the onlookers in Lu Xun’s writings, it seems as though the extinguishing of a revolutionary regime is not something worth grieving or being outraged about. The tone used by this nobody reminds me of the way my dad and his drinking buddies comment on the international situation after they’ve had too much to drink at a dinner party—things like, “The Americans are finished.” What kind of statement is that? It is plainly reactionary. It also reminds me of how someone on Bilibili mocked the Indian Communist Party (Maoist) for falling into a low period. I feel that there may well be a similar defeatist meaning behind this nobody’s remarks.

There are also this nobody’s remarks about wanting to get into a Project 985 university, the remarks asking for advice under the “Sponge” post, and the random file they dropped under the post exposing He Long in an attempt to refute it. I think everyone needs your explanations and self-criticism.

How can you arrive at that conclusion? When Chiang Kai-shek attacked the Jiangxi base areas and the Wang Ming line made it impossible for them to hold out, the Central Red Army was also forced to relocate. The CPI (Maoist)’s base areas in India are being attacked by compradore forces and have suffered some setbacks, but hasn’t the CPI (Maoist) now shifted to guerrilla warfare? How can that be considered the end of the Indian revolution? Besides, as long as the conditions for revolution exist in India and it remains a semi-colonial, semi-feudal society, the revolution must continue—there’s no such thing as it being over.

Exactly. Because of Wang Ming’s leftist line, the revolutionary base areas also shrank dramatically at the time. But could anyone say that the Chinese Communist Party was finished, or that the Chinese revolution was finished? No. On the contrary, after the Party corrected its erroneous line and established Chairman Mao’s revolutionary line as the guiding line of the Party, the Chinese revolution began to flourish again. So we must not conclude that the Indian revolution is finished simply because it is currently experiencing a temporary low ebb.

Such remarks are like saying, “The Chinese revolution is doomed,” when it was in crisis a hundred years ago. You can’t write it off just because you’ve fallen into a disadvantageous position.

Those are the kinds of things said by cynical spectators who stand alongside the bourgeoisie. They gloat and contemptuously pronounce the revolution dead in advance, then hypocritically sigh about it, and finally defend themselves by saying that they are “just stating the facts.”

Are they facts? Nobody’s defense of “the revolution is finished” is that “the revolutionary situation is difficult.” Does “very difficult” decisively imply “finished”? Of course not. This logical rupture directly shows that Nobody is not so much making a judgment as making a wish.

Is that really the truth? Doesn’t the document issued by the Northern Coordinating Committee itself show that the CPI (Maoist) is still engaged in struggle—both theoretical and military?

What makes Nobody’s words disgusting is not that they are “imprecise,” but that their standpoint is not on the side of the broad masses of the oppressed, and that their attitude is contemptuous. Attitude is an expression of one’s standpoint. Nobody imagines himself a nobleman seated high above in the Roman Colosseum, watching revolutionaries and reactionaries fight like slaves in the arena below. Whenever one side falls behind, he airily sighs: “Weren’t they so good at fighting before? What happened? As expected, they’re finished.” Yet he is nothing more than a parasite dependent on his parents, someone who neither understands labor nor struggle, and who lags far behind the masses.

Chairman Mao taught us that the noble are the most foolish. That is exactly right—this is precisely what such people are like.

I was wrong.

I feel that your actions are inconsistent with your words. You have verbally admitted your mistake, but you have offered no explanation for your actions or motives. I can only interpret this kind of apology as an attempt to prevent everyone from continuing to criticize and question you. You should engage with everyone in a discussion about your disparaging remarks on the issue of the Indian Maoists and the matter of your “sponge” self-introduction.

Why does this nobody repeatedly make misguided statements without seriously reflecting on them, and then try to grovel his way out of having those erroneous ideas analyzed and criticized? I hope this nobody will at least express what they really think instead of making some bizarre claim every time and then trying to hastily smooth things over by groveling.

19586 What do you think about the CPI (Maoist) wanting to expel sexual opportunists from within the party?

Seeing the Northern Coordination Committee of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) emphasize the importance of ideological struggle at the end of the article, as well as opposition to sexual activity not guided by proletarian ideology, I was reminded of what Flame said before, and got a little worked up at the time.

As for expelling sexual opportunists from the Party, at a critical juncture when the Indian revolution is in a precarious situation, with many senior leaders having either sacrificed themselves after being betrayed by traitors or simply becoming traitors themselves, adopting measures that may seem less than “gentle and persuasive” is entirely understandable—especially since the article itself briefly mentions the reactionary nature of sexual opportunists, which is unprecedented. This article’s position on LGBT people goes a step further than the position expressed by General Secretary Basavaraj in a 2022 interview (if the interview shared by people in leftist circles is genuine): although the interview also expressed opposition to sexual anarchism and promiscuous behavior, its wording was not particularly forceful, speaking of “opposing and discouraging” them, as if this were purely a matter of personal morality. Overall, it emphasized the need to properly guide LGBT people and promised to improve their objective and subjective circumstances, while also holding that LGBT people “are born with certain physiological characteristics and special physiological and psychological (genetic) traits.” The passage contains almost no class analysis at all, making it sound practically unlike something a communist leader would say (which is why I think the publisher may have fabricated this content). This article, by contrast, primarily attempts to conduct its analysis from a class perspective, and criticizes those who promote and indulge in promiscuity, those with deeply entrenched hedonistic ideas—or, in other words, those who are enthusiastic about engaging in “sexual activity outside the guidance of proletarian ideology”—as sexual opportunists, elevating the matter to the level of ideological and political struggle. It also explicitly states: “Our Party believes that terms such as gender or queer are postmodern, pro-market bourgeois concepts promoted by imperialism, and therefore must be opposed… Our Party also believes that gender transition may be considered only when certain objective biological conditions causing the desire to transition are present; in the absence of such conditions, the desire to transition is essentially a market-driven, imperialist-sponsored postmodern ideological trend.” This precisely demonstrates that the Indian revolution is still developing through twists and turns, rather than being in the state of “how long can the red flag last?” as reactionaries and certain defeatists claim. Ultimately, as Chairman Mao said: “Whether the ideological and political line is correct or not is decisive. If the Party’s line is correct, we have everything: without people, we can gain people; without guns, we can obtain guns; without political power, we can seize political power. If the line is incorrect, even what we have can be lost. The line is the key link; once the key link is grasped, everything else falls into place.”

LGBT is simply anarchism in the realm of gender; that too is anarchism, and ultimately it can only harm the revolution.

It seems that organizations abroad really like using the term “postmodernism” to describe ideas that the association considers anarchist. For now, I don’t really understand the specific reasons behind this.

Even if the current situation is difficult, it is no more difficult than in the past. Could things really be more difficult than during the period when a revisionist pseudo-Communist Party held undisputed dominance? Could they be more difficult than during the period of near-total silence around the 1980s? What is obvious is that the mass foundation of the Indian revolution is stronger than it was in the past. Even in the face of sabotage and repression by the reactionary government, commemorative activities spontaneously organized by the masses still take place from time to time in the hometowns of martyrs of the CPI (Maoist), especially those of high-ranking leaders who have been killed. Indian Marxist-Leninist-Maoists have gained richer revolutionary experience and adopted a more correct line; the influence of the CPI (Maoist) is also greater than it was in the past.
